Regarding off road trucks, I had a chevy silverado 4x4 fleet side, that truck climbed like a rat and would go anyplace I chose to take it, along with my kids we never lacked for something to do or a place to go as utah is wide open for 4x4 fun with all the mountains & desert country you could ask for. I have seen old beatle volkswagons & older mustangs on top of some hills you would only think a jeep would dare to climb. So get out there & enjoy yer truck or what ever it may be.

I miss the Toyota 4x4 I once had. It was a 1992 model and it had the 22R-E 4 cylinder with automatic transmission and manual hubs. It was a great truck. It was a beast in the snow and mud was no challenge. Someday I plan on having another 4x4 truck.

I'm totally satisfied with my 2000 Dodge Dakota quad cab 4x4 with V8 engine. I recently climbed a 60 degree hill with it. It was kind of scary too!

I'd settle for a PRE - Dodge era Jeep CJ-7 set up for the Northern Snows and mud holes, hill and rock climbing too. At least on the CJ's you could get a FACTORY manual hub. So far, Ford and Toyota offer them anymore.

I can't use manual hubs due to multiple spinal lumbar fusions. I'm happy with what I have as I now KNOW it'll climb a steep hill & go through a 2' deep mudhole-that's plenty for ME. ;D

The BEST way to have a custom off road rig like that is to buy a standard jeep with the engine and transmission you want, then install the lift yourself. That way you KNOW everything's new, matching, and installed right. The you can set it up EXACTLY the way you want it. Chances are then it'll outperform your buddy's jeep once you get it done.
If you DO go to buy 1 already lifted and all, be SURE to inspect it thoroughly to ensure it's in good condition. Anytime you install a lift kit & bigger tires, it's going to affect the handling, braking, and accelerate wear on brakes & bearings. Just remember that when driving it. That's why you need to make sure it isn't wore out.

Neil, I agree. Build it yourself that way you know the integrity of what is in the vehicle. Also another thing to watch out for is the angle of the driveshaft to the pumpkin of both rears, too steep of an angle and you'll go through universal joints right and left.
I like the older Jeep CJ's myself overall, but a good Toyota or a nice old Ford or Dodge truck IMO is tough to beat. ;D

Every one loves a good off road truck. There is no best there is some thing for every one cant use man hubbs get a dodge raider why best auto 4x4 there is you only hafe to back it up one rotation of the tires to get into 4x4 most autos you hafe to back it up so mutch you have no room. If u need a bed nothing is better then a old chevy.

As far as winches, I have seen receiver hitches on the front and rear of the vehicles so the winch could be moved from the front to the back in case of an odd or difficult predicament. And snatch blocks are beneficial too. They double the pulling power of a winch. For instance just say you have a 12,000 lb. capacity winch, it will double the pulling capacity to 24,000 lbs., and all a snatch block is is basically a pulley.
