By now everybody has either already stocked up, or are still stocking up on guns, ammo, or reloading components. I have a bit stashed back, but am still stocking up as I can afford it. That ammo prices has went through the roof should come as no surprise. The simple fact that everyone is stocking up is what makes it almost impossible to obtain ammo in the quantity/brand/bullet style/weight for a reasonable price.
One sad truth I've came to realize is I can no longer try new guns out in several different calibers/cartridges like I did in the past. I'm sticking to the guns I have in the cartridges I'm prepared to load for. To get a new firearm in a new caliber means buying dies, cases, bullets, and powder for that firearm. At this time I'm not financially able to make that kind of investment to set up for new cartridges. I'm down to loading just 3 centerfire handgun cartridges-.41
magnum, .44 magnum, and naturally, .45 acp. In that way, I can get by with only 1 kind of primer-large pistol. Also I now use only 2 different powders-Unique (.45acp) and H110 (.41 mag & .44 mag).
My menu for rifle cartridges is somewhat more varied, but just as limited. I don't presently reload for anything smaller than .284 diameter so I only have to stock up 1 rifle primer to cover all my rifle reloading needs-large rifle. I reload for 4 different .284 cartridges-7mm08, .284, my 7mm/375 wildcat, and 7mm rem ultra mag. That way I can get by with just 3 powders (IMR4064, H414, & IMR 4831) and 1 "standard" deer bullet-140 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip. I recently bought another Browning A-bolt to rechamber to 7mm RUM. That will replace the A-bolt I had to sell just a little while ago.
I'm getting ready to build a 35 Whelen on an Mauser 98 action so that will entail stocking up for that cartridge when I get it done IF the loading components are available then. I'm personally fond of the 35 Whelen as it's able to drop anything in north america within 300 yards if I do my part, and is an EXCELLENT non-magnum elk cartridge. One of these days I WILL draw an elk tag for eastern Ky, and I'll be ready for that time.
Since I don't shoot much shotgun sports any more I MAY start reloading for 12 gauge again and then again, maybe not. Since my DPMS AR15 .223 coyote & groundhog rifle groups 3 shots in 1/2" at 100 yards with the cheap factory ammo of which I have a few thousand rounds, I see no need to reload for it. I DO know I'm going to stock up on as much .22 rimfire-both .22LR & .22WMR as I can. The only problem I'm having is I like to shoot so much, I keep dipping deep into my supply, only to have to replenish it later. Let's hear yall's thoughts on the subject. Neil
