I can remember back in the early 80's my now late half brother had two muzzle fed rifles. He had a CVA and a Hawken. One was .45 and the other was a .50 cal. . I believe the CVA was the .45 and the Hawken was the .50 IIRC. Both were awesome! He would take a 3" Magnum 12 ga. empty / used shotgun shell and cut off the crimped end and load them full while tamping with his finger full of FFG DuPont or Goex black powder and dump that in the barrel and finish loading with a grease patched MAXI BALL and fire it. It would kick the bejeezuz out of him but he'd laugh like an idiot and do it again. He died of cancer a few years back, do I miss him? Nope!

I've considered a .50 or a .54 caliber for deer. Once in a while they are fun just to see the smoke fly. LOL!

I currently have 2 Knight inline muzzleloaders with scopes-they shoot extremely accurate out to about 250 yards with the right loads.

Back in high school, one of my good friends was a Civil War reenactor, something I never really got, but he had a genuine 58 cal Springfield rifled musket. What a hoot that was to shoot. You could see the minie bullet in flight and when it hit something it really thumped it. Other than a cap and ball pistol, I've never really shot any BP since, but just traded for a 50 cal Hawken looking rifle. I'm eager to try it out, but there isn't much out here you can hunt with it, since most shooting here is a lot longer range.

Here in my state we have special seasons for in-line BP and flintlock, but percussion can be used in Rifle seasons. We are blessed with that. I need to go buy one.

I used to have a .50 cal. Hawken rifle but some guy named Jeff has it now. I've always prefered the Civil War era ML rifles. I like the big .58 and even bigger .69 rifled muskets.
