I saw this write up in the NEWEST "Rifle" Magazine yesterday and had to laugh myself silly! All it is, is a necked down .35 Whelen back to .308" with a shorter shoulder. Basically a .30-06 Ackley Improved with a VERY short shoulder somewhat blown out in the main body of the casing and adds a "WHOOP DE DO" 200 FPS or so with a 165 gr. projectile! Some FACTORY loads CLAIM to hit 2900 FPS!!!! Oehler Chrono mean anything?
Wanna take off something old? Peel off your shorts Dan Gibson! Ron Spomer is the author of the article in the magazine mentioned above and he really RAVED about it.
"A Nosler 165 grain AccuBond and Reloder 22 @ 63 grains should get nearly 3,000 FPS!" so he raves, unquote, not in exact words, with a 24" barrel. BIG FREAKIN' WHOOP!
Will the deer know what caliber or at what speed the projectile killed it with? ANSWER: NO!! Oh yeah, I'm gonna run out to Bear's place and have him re-barrel my hacked up K98 German Mauser for this caliber right now!! As soon as there is the ACTUAL "Second Tuesday, next week.", or the ACTUAL holiday called "St. Swithins Day" is enacted.
To quote the author here: "When asked why anyone would want to own a .300 Whelen, Dan Gibson answered this way: "One of the first questions hunters ask one another in the woods is "whachya shootin?", If you say a .30-06. the conversation is pretty much over. But if you answer .300 Whelen, they'll be talking about you at camp all night!". To quote the actual magazine article, unquote.
Who in hell do these "Dudes" think they are fooling? Get the magazine, read the article on page 22, and continued on page 87, March 2010 "Rifle" Magazine and read for yourself if you don't believe me.
Also, Mike Venturino stated in an another article in the same magazine about how the rage on the Internet is how all these guys have sub minute of angle rifles is basically B.S. . Well Mike, If you got off your laurels and had a QUALITY gunsmith build your stuff for you and you could shoot prone, you'd see the difference.
NOT saying I AM a gunsmith, mind you. Never went to school for it and I'm NOT KNOCKING those that did go to school for such a trade. I went to school for my CDL A license, not long after the Chaufeurs License / Articulators licenses were abolished. Depending on what state you live in.
I admit, I'm overweight too, but when I was still skinny and fit and trim, I could do wonders with my old "Boat Oar Sporterized M-1917 "Enfield" as he said there was no such thing as, and could spank him on the range with no questions asked. I'm 5'10" and 202 lbs. now. I should be 165 lbs. for my height!
And as far as his / Mike Venturino's nickname, "The Duke", there is ONLY ONE DUKE and his name was John Wayne! Drop the nickname Mike, you never did what he did in earning a Star rating in movies. And as far as you stating that "Your Coaching" helped "Quigley Down Under"..... I'd like to see that in writing too. Muscle to bone, not bone on bone!
