.450 Marlin? Which would you own and which would you prefer? Me? I'm old school. Hand me a Marlin or a Ruger No.1 with the HOT "Ruger Loads" and turn me loose!

Give me a Sharps or a Springfield trapdoor in 45-70 loaded up with 500 grain bullets over a hefty charge of BP and I can take any game in the world.

id take the 450 over the 45-70 only because the stronger actions of the 450 ive heard it said that the 450 is everything that the 45-70 could be if it werent for greedy lawyers

I'll agree with both of you guys on all counts. If I had to go OLD School I'd go with Tom's Trapdoor. But if I had to step it up a notch or three I'd go with a Marlin or Ruger No.1 and hop up the powder in smokeless powders. Hell guys, I like 'em all! Now if it were a really serious choice, Sharps in .45-140! ;D Or Bear building a modern steel .50-140. ;D

I'll choose a 1874 Sharps in 45/70. The .450 Marlin cartridge was developed specifically to produce more velocity in modern actions strong enough to easily withstand those pressures but for people that don't reload. A reloader can safely make the 45/70 produce the exact same ballistics in a strong action as the .450 Marlin. Marlin brought the .450 out with a belt so that it cannot be fired in weak actions such the trapdoors.

I traded for a 1874 sharps in 45/70 today! I can't wait to go shooting with it.

Well I've been shooting it as much as possible and have been getting 2"-3" groups at 100 yards with most going under 2.5". It shoots pretty sweet and I'm sure that accuracy will improve as soon as I start loading for it and get a good load worked up.
