OK, I'm going out on a very thin limb here but I got a harness with a good nylon rope tied to the tree. But I have tossed this around in my head for about a week or so and decided to ask this here now. Hey Bear? Feel free to launch the maters at will Bro! ;D And this is also a job for you to do on my K98K. I need a 7.62 / .308 or bang around '06 recently.
Here is the deal. I'd like Y'all to pick your favorite milsurp weapon / barrelled action BUT chamber / barrel it in Common calibers as in .30-06, .308 / 7.62mm, etc. Can be civilian or military calibers that are COMMONLY found even in backwoods stores, not just stores found in large towns or small cities. Even .30 Carbine too, or 7.62x39. Or specialty shops.
What weapon / barrelled action or even semi auto would you pick as a Bug Out Weapon. Personally, I'd go with a Mauser K98K rebarrelled in either 7.62mm / .308 or .30-06 {good for 800 yards to over a mile depending on .308 or '06} with quick detach scope mounts and iron sights. Have even the scope bases accept crude iron sights, or specially design iron sights that can also be affixed to the rifle and allow the scope to be used if need be or detach the scope and / or mounts quickly and use the iron sights in case the scope is damaged somehow.
Reason I'd go with a K98K Mauser is because you can find magazines that will hold 20 rounds {that were made in Nazi Germany in WWII, Numrich Gun Parts} that go in place of the removable floorplate and that will allow you to hold more ammo to make shots between reloads. Less maintenance than a semi auto or full auto or even a modern pump action Rifle / Carbine, simple but effective and the Mauser action has been time tested and proven for well over 100 years. Pretty much ANY modern bolt action has subtle similarites to a Mauser from over 100 years ago. Most / some parts will interchange as well, with most / some older Mauser actions.
Even though there is a MASSIVE ammo shortage, Federal ammo still abounds, even at Wal-Mart or even the lower grade Winchester Gray Box or Win. White Box. And besides if the SHTF, people WILL find a way to take over Government facilites to gather ammo / weapons and MRE's and other things they can use to survive on. Lots of retired or got out after X amount of years of being a pilot or tank driver etc. .
What is your choice? Please feel free to explain at length.
Also, many folks have to admit that the .308" diameter bullet is the Number One "most popular caliber" for shooting / reloading in the United States. Granted the 7mm / .284" has almost the same amount of choices as the .30's, and the 6.5mm / .264" is slowly catching the 7mm. But pound for pound, still in the U.S., the .30's are the king of the heap. .223 / 5.56mm is lingering behind the 7mm's too. Same as 9mm, but the .45's and .44's make great sidearms / subguns too. There are MANY personal favorites out there, but I'm talking run of the mill MOST popular according to the last RCBS polls I've seen over the last 20 years.
12 gauge too. What one would you pick out of milsurp or even the latest Benelli issue? I'd go with the M-97 or the M-12 or the new Benelli. Birdshot, Buckshot or Slugs. Tough to beat a shotgun. Handgun.... M-1911A1 .45 5", hands down! Carbine? M-1 Carbine, that ammo is still popular all over the U.S. too. Semi auto rifles.... M-1 Garand or M-1A. M-1903 Springfield or M-1917 Enfield, both in their original calibers, either scoped or not. .22's and 9mm's too.
