Well folks, this is that time of year again, whatever you call them: Whistlepigs, Dirtpigs, Woodchucks, Groundhogs, Devil Spawn etc. . They are coming to a farm near you! Saw one dead alongside the road a couple of weeks ago and I hollered out loud: "HA! VICTIM!", too bad I didn't get that one.". Prime up your deer rifle or varmint rifle and let's get to work folks! LOL! ;D

Never tried it but I hear it's a blast. There aren't any where I live but I have seen a few in Ohio when I was there visiting friends a few years back.
I've heard you chase one into its burrow, then go past the burrow 25 yards or so and plop down to prone. When it pops its head out, it always looks first in the direction you were before. That's when you pop it in the back of the head.
Are they edible?

Jeff, Yes young pup groundhogs are edible, under a year old. After that they are nasty. Out west they are known as Marmots, same type of animal basically.
By the way. Who is "Guest" in here? Why not log in / sign in and be a full fledged member?

No offense Bill, but I save the beer for after the groundhogs are shot for the day. ;D

That is a nice one there. Someone asked above if they were edible. Yes they are, if they around this size or smaller, like year old pups.

Yea travis , they are good eating, that is the perfect size. i do them in the oven with sauce. 325 degrees ,in a roaster, seasoned and covered with tomato sauce. cook till the meat falls off the bone.
