Which do you prefer and why? I have a Marlin M-1894S .44 Magnum that is like new but I got it used for a good price. I also gave a very nice Winchester M-1894 .30-30 to my Dad sometime back. I like both. I have no problems with either and find both to be very well made.
The only two small gripes I have about my Marlin is that cussed crossbolt safety and the Micro Groove rifling. I wish I could afford to get a Ballard cut barrel in .44 Magnum for it.

I've always preferred the Marlin action due to it's scope friendly solid top receiver. It also seems to me that Marlins have USUALLY been slightly more accurate than comparable Winchesters. I attribute this to the stiffer receiver.

Winchesters. I don't know why - just the cool factor I guess. Nothing like a model '94.

My late half brother had a nice Winchester M-1894 .30-30 that had that dreaded "side saddle" scope and mount on it and one time years ago we were hunting in a friend's field and he tried to hit a running buck and emptied his gun while using the scope. Well, being the smart ass I am and I admit to it, I took my Remington Sportsman 78 bolt action .30-06 and took one "running shot" at the same buck while using common logic.... it is called "LEAD THE DEER" and I dumped it. Well, needless to say my Dad and my half brothers buddy rolled with laughter and my half brother cussed me twice. The third time, I dropped him with a fist! LMAO!
But needless to say, my half brother used his iron sights from then on if the buck was running and never cussed me again. The next year my half brother used his iron sights to drop a running buck.... why? He saw me raise up my '06 and he got the drop on the buck before I claimed two in a row. He was going to raz me about it, but then he saw the butt of my rifle, he backed off. LOL!!!!
Good times for sure!

Marlin or Winchester, I was wondering why you dislike the Micro Grove rifling in the Marlin. I have a Marlin 30-30 & it shoots right on with every shot. Regards, techno

Techno, I had a Marlin M-30AS in .30-30 and the bore with Micro Groove was shot out in 10 Factory rounds of Remington Core Lokt 170 gr. H.P. ammo. The bore looked as smooth as the inside of a piece of PVC pipe.

I prefer a '73 Winchester. I like the .44-40 round and the rifle had the hi-cap mag of the day holding 15 rounds.

Had both a Win 94 & still have a Marlin 336W . I prefer the Marlin, easier to dissasemble for cleaning, and more accurate.
